Order in my Folder 1.3

"Order in my Folder" is a unique free utility to archive / reorder files from a single folder into subfolders based on different file sorting logics.
Version 1.3 includes both the GUI version (OimFG.exe) and the Command Line version (Oimf.exe) of "Order in my Folder", the executable files can be found inside the installation folder.
How can "Order in my Folder" help you?
If you have a folder containing a large amount of files, created by a logging system, or acting as some kind of a drop box or maybe just a folder with a lot of pictures or other files and you think it's time to do some order in this folder.
With "Order in my Folder" this kind of reorder can be done easily, just define the appropriate file sorting logic and rules and it will do the work for you.
"Order in my Folder" will not move any folders, it will handle files only.
"Order in my Folder" can sort the files in the target folder and move them into subfolders based on one of eight available file sorting logics.
You can do for example a file sorting by modification dates, "Order in my Folder" will scan the target folder and move each file into a subfolder named as the file's modification date.
So all files from 7-8-2010 will be moved into a subfolder named 7-8-2010 and all files from 5-10-2011 will be moved into subfolder named 5-10-2011, etc.
You can do the same kind of order but based on month-year file sorting, so all files that was modified at 9-2010 it will be moved into a sub folder named 9-2010, and all files from 7-2011 will be moved into a subfolder named 7-2011, etc.
It is possible to do the file sorting by year only, so all files from 2010 will be moved into subfolder named 2010 and all files from 2011 will be moved into a subfolder named 2011, etc.
This file sorting types can be by modification dates or by creation dates, be sure you understand the differences between them before you are selecting the file sorting type, some more info about dates can be found in the included help and readme.txt files.
And that's not all, "Order in my Folder" can also do this file sorting by file types, so all exe files will be moved into a subfolder named exe and all txt files will be moved into subfolder named txt, etc.
The last method to do the file sorting is by the first character of files, which means all file names starting with "a" will be moved into a subfolder named "a" and all file names starting with "b" will be moved into a subfolder named "b", etc.
The file sorting process can be applied with wildcards (*.*, *.jpg, *.log, etc.) and can be applied only on files older than X days.
You can use the Command line version to execute it from a batch file or a script or you can do it directly from the GUI version which can be added to the Windows Folder Context Menu (right click on a folder).
Please read the included help or readme.txt files for more important information.

Hi, this utility was developed in a Windows 7 environment and was tested on several Windows 7 and Windows XP machines.

Did you try to run it as administrator? (Right click run as admin...).

Did you try it on a different machine?

Is it possible to set a limit of for instance 10.000 files per sub folder and if yes! Whats the syntax for this?

Zed said...

Hi SIMTANDA,

No it is not possible.
But it is a good idea for the next version...

Hi, Thank you for this piece of work
it's really nice and I think it could be usefull but actually I need a "sort by the [n] first letter of the file name"

to "folderize" files like :
blablah, blablah_01, blablah_02, blablah_small, woohwoo, woohwoo_01, woohwoo_02...etc etc.

Do you think a future version could do that ?

Zed said...

Yes, I will add it to the next version

Thanks for writing this utility.
No doubt future versions will get more powerful.
I like small programs like this that does one thing fast, easily and well. I hate other large complex programs that want to take over your computer.

Same issue as last post. Tried installation as admin (running Win 7 Pro 64-bit, and custom install (none of the other options chosen). Fails with EAccessViolation - memory read failure of some kind.

Additionally the non-gui version works. Can't past the box but here are the details: Application Error
Exception EAccessViolation in module OimFG.exe at 0001F7B0. Access violation at address 0041F7B0 in module 'OimFG.exe'. Read of address 000003E4. By the way, the message is exactly the same (same memory and code ref) whether running as Admin or not. Again Win7 Pro SP 1 and all patches. 4GB memory.

Hi, the installer crash looks to me like a problem with the installer services on your machine.
Send me your email and I will send you a download link for a zip version.
My Utility "7 quick fix 2.0" can fix installer crashes, but it need to be installed...

I am looking for a way to sort photos by date, but not by year. So all taken on 1st Jan together, then 2nd Jan etc, regardless of year. I don't need to copy or move the files, but if that was a side effect that would be ok (I would just work on a copy). Is that supported? thanks Rik

Hi,

You can sort by date, so all images created (of mdified) at 1.1.2011 will be moved to the same folder and images created at 1.1.2012 will be moved to a different folder.
OimF doesn't sort regardless of year.
Maybe I will add it in the next version, which is not planned yet.

Installs fine but then gives the Exception EAccessViolation in module OimFG.exe at 0015EA5A. Access violation at address 0015EA5A in module 'OimFG.exe'. Read of address 0000000D. when it is run

Hello and thank you for this utility,

Are you planing on further developing this great tool ?

If so, I'd love to see the following features :

- ability to sort by file names, but not only on the first letter (already suggested in a previous post)

- ability to sort by dates (creation or modification) but on reverse format like : YYYY-MM-DD : this way, the alphabetic sorting corresponds to chronological order, THAT would be really great.

Anyway, very good utility, thanks again

Hi Mathmathou,

Thank you for using my software.
I believe that I will continue and develop this tool, but I will have to find the time to do it since this is not my real life job...
I think your ideas are very good and I will add them to few others I received from many people.

I am using W4F 2.5.1 with a create trigger on a network folder and it works when i copy a file to that folder. It doesn't work if i upload a file to that folder using ftp.

Zed said...

Hi,

This is not the Watch 4 Folder 2.5 post, but...

This is how the Windows shell notification works.
You can monitor changes on network places only if Windows Explorer is open pointing to the target folder and you must use it to copy, delete, etc.

Hi,
